Cox Preferred, Cox Premier or Cox Ultimate Internet Service users (typically more than $50 a month), or others who want to upgrade to Cox's faster service in the future, pick any of these DOCSIS 3.0 modems (Premier subscribers should pick a modem with at least 8-channel bonding downstream to maximize speed. These are the ARRIS/Motorola SB6141, SB6183, SBG6580, SBG6700, SBG6782, SBG6900, Netgear C3000, CG3000Dv2, C6300 and C3700. Ultimate subscribers should buy a modem with 16-channel bonding downstream. Cox business customers should buy either the ARRIS/Motorola SB6141 or the SB6183 which are listed here on the Cox Compatible Business Modem List.

All of these modems are high quality and have pretty much the same features, except of course those with routers built in. So don't worry too much about deciding which one to buy. Price should be a main factor in your buying decision.

ARRIS / Motorola SB6141 SURFBoard DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem

The ARRIS / Motorola SB6141 is the updated version of their popular SB6121. It has 8-channel downstream bonding and 4-channel upstream, twice the maximum download speed of the SB6121 (Comcast / Xfinity has put the SB6121 on the end of life, EOL, list.) Not sure which one to buy? Buy this one. The newest version of the SB6141 is the SB6183, which has twice the maximum download speed of the SB6141. Supports IPv6 and IPv4 addressing. Works with Windows, Mac, or Linux computers.

The ARRIS / Motorola SBG6782 has a built-in wireless-AC1750 router, for some of the fastest WIFI speeds. It also has 4 Gigabit Ethernet Ports. 8-channel downstream, and 4-channel up and is a few inches bigger than other modems. Since this model can be hard to find sometimes, check out the SBG6700 and SBG6900. They are similar. Supports IPv6 and IPv4 addressing. Works with Windows, Mac, or Linux computers.

Cable Modem Buying Tips and FAQ's

Cox Essential or Cox Starter Internet Service users (typically less than $50 a month), buy any of these DOCSIS 2.0 modems. If you think you'll be upgrading to Cox's faster services in the future, buy a DOCSIS 3.0 modem above. We highly recommend buying a DOCSIS 3.0 modem in order to future-proof yourself as DOCSIS 2.0 modems are slowly phased out. New Cox customers need to buy a DOCSIS 3.0 modem, only existing customers can buy a DOCSIS 2.0 modem.

All of these modems are high quality and have pretty much the same features, except of course those with routers built in. So don't worry too much about deciding which one to buy. Price should be the most important factor.

Motorola Surfboard SBG901 DOCSIS 2.0 Wireless Cable Modem

The Motorola SBG901 has a built-in wireless-G router and has an Ethernet port. We're not a big fan of these modem/router combos, but if you don't need the features of the latest routers, this will work just fine.
