On the highest bandwidth on 40mhz on the N network i noticed modem would overheat. The heat sink is burring up to the touch; this results in wifi becoming disabled. I recommend after market cooling options if you run into this

Awesome modem/router combo. The SBG6580-3.5.8.4-GA-00-505-NOSH firmware version works fine with Suddenlink. No provisioning issues, no connection issues. Getting 45-50 mbps throughput consistently on my 50mbps account. There are several tweaks that can be made to optimize the wifi performance (routerguidedotcom), and I did get the Suddenlink tech to make me new cables (don't use retail cables!) and splitter. Have great power levels. Flawless connection and performance. Go figure.

I had similar problems with the constant rest. I was starting to think I made a poor choice. I relocated my router and placed a fan from an old CPU heat sink underneath the router....BAM! No more resetting or dropped connections. Im not even going to list all the devices I have connected but believe me it s a good amount. Since I added the fan I have put this guy through its paces and it has not let me down. I suggest to all with the reboot issue to find a well ventilated spot or try to get a fan very very close. (it sits directly on the one I am using) Maybe a laptop cooling station would work.

We purchased this model several years ago anticipating the need for it in the future. Well the future is here and we've had no trouble with the modem, it has been working great all this time.

Well, I,m sorry all you seem to have problems with this modem. But I have had this one for 4 years running Docis 3.0 100 meg from charter. # home pc,s 2 lap tops and cells running wifi. This is a FANTASTIC Modem. Very fast very reliable.
And besides ALL modems must be reset at times to refresh ip,s. And done properly, use internet to find out how.
I build computers as a hobby for 15 years and would recommend this Modem to anyone and have.
Jim Ballentine (Chesapeake Va) says...
constant need to reset. very disappointed due frustrating drop of signal in midst of work.
Will (Phoenix) says...
Constantly requires restarts. Never had a modem that does. Would not buy again. Even though this is less than a year old, I am going today to buy a new modem, and Apple Airport instead of this combo. Anyone want to buy mine, let me know. Cheap.
Sean Vinson (Walnut Creek) says...
Sold it yet?
Firemedic (Conway) says...
Sudden Link does not support this modem/gateway. Motorola states that it doesn't not provide firmware updates and the problem is that if you buy this unit it will need a firmware update. drops connection and slow page loads without the update. 3 way call with Sudden Link and Motorola and Motorola doesn't support this. Check your ISP before you purchase!!!!!! or you will have troubles with the service and it won't be the fault of your ISP but the fireware on this modem/gateway

Customer: The tech my daughter spoke with said any modem on the list except this one would work, what is up with this?

Support.: So just in general, that really is one of the best modem/router combo boxes that you could use. Normally, that modem works just fine with our system with no problems. However, what happened is that Motorola released a firmware update for that specific modem that made some very substantial changes to the way the modem communicates with the CMTS (basically our server and provisioning system). Those changes have made that modem temporarily unusable in our system. We have contacted Motorola to have them try to release another update to correct the issues, but we're still really waiting on them to deliver that firmware update to correct the changes they made. Until they update that firmware, that specific modem will not work with our cable modem provisioning system. I don't know the exact specifics of the why, but I know that's the reason it's been not working

What cable company was this?
Shenan Stanley (Bryan) says...
The cable company would be Suddenlink. A friend of mine is in the same situation in College Station's sister city of Bryan.
alan (College Station) says...
Suddenlink currently lists this model as one of its approved modem-routers. Our area just got SuddenLink access, we are considering switching.
I need a min of four Ethernet ports. Anybody have more recent advice about hardware, please
Carlos Arribas (Miami) says...
Modem works well for first 30-40 days speed degrades requires daily reboots. I have owned 2 of these and they are horrible
Paul O Gygi (San Jose) says...
SBG6580 functioned well but died after 22 months. Motorola warrantee is 12 months.
