Buy A Time Warner Spectrum / Bright House
Approved Cable Modem

A guide to finding a modem that works with your Internet Service

Time Warner Spectrum / Bright House Compatible DOCSIS 3.0 and 3.1 Cable Modems

Modem list updated November 2018. Prices updated every hour.

Charter has now bought Time Warner and Bright House TV and internet businesses and is beginning the process of rebranding it Spectrum. You can still buy your own modems. (If you're not in a former Time Warner/Bright House area and have Spectrum internet, go here to find modems: Charter Approved Modems.)

Below are all the modems on the Time Warner/Spectrum Approved Modem List and that can be bought at Amazon, Walmart or Best Buy. We've gone through all of them to find the ones that can be purchased at major retailers.

If you're paying $10 a month to rent a modem from Time Warner or Bright House, that's $120 a year or $600 over 5 years. You can buy a new one that will pay for itself in less than one year.

Easy to install. Just call your internet company and give them the Cable Modem ID (MAC address) and drop off your old leased modem with them. (Instructions for finding your MAC Address)

Note: If you have Time Warner phone service, you can buy one of these modems for internet service. You then keep your old Time Warner modem for phone service, and Time Warner will not charge you for rental fees. Here's a helpful link on Time Warner's site: Instructions for activating and connecting modems. Basically you just need a splitter to run one cable to your phone modem and one to your new internet modem.

DOCSIS 3.0 and DOCSIS 3.1 Cable Modems

Cable Modem Buying Tips and FAQ's

Time Warner Spectrum or Bright House customers buy any of these DOCSIS 3.0 or DOCSIS 3.1 modems. If you subscribe to plan up to 100 Mbps, choose a modem with 8 downstream channels to maximize your speed. For plans up to 300 Mbps, buy one with at least 16 downstream channels. For higher speed plans, but a modem with 32 downstream channels.

This list also includes minimally qualifed modems. You can read more about that here: Minimally Qualified Modems

All of these modems are high quality and have pretty much the same features, except for number of download channels and those with routers built in. So don't worry too much about deciding which one to buy.

Minimally Qualified Modems

This is Spectrum's statement about minimally qualified modems that can be found here: Charter Spectrum Approved Modems List

"You may also choose to buy a modem that has passed minimal testing to confirm that it won't cause harm to our network. Though permitted for use on our network, we recommend against using Minimally Qualified Modems because they haven't been tested to confirm their ability to deliver your purchased internet service speed."

"Note: If you attempt to install your own device from our authorized modems list that doesn't meet the speed tier you ordered or if we can't determine the device qualification, you'll get a message that notifies you of this, and you'll be asked to acknowledge this before you proceed."

Peter (Glens Falls) says...
will the TP-Link ac1750 work with spectrum? any known issues ?
Robert Barker (Austin) says...
I learned this the hard way and no one believes me. I have the SBG6580 which works fine but it must be purchased BRAND NEW. You cannot get a USED router. It will not work. I have 2 of them that I got cheap on ebay but they told me once they are configured that's it. you cannot reset it as a new unit.
wendy Jc Hills (Augusta) says...
I have Spectrum and want to buy a new modem and router instead of renting one from them for 10 dollars a month. I would like a router that updates its firmware automatic. Any suggestions. Thanks
Joe (Columbus) says...
If you are buying a router/cable modem combo you will have to trust your isp to update your device as you will not be able to control it. You are better off buying these device separately if you are concerned about security as the isp's have shown they do not give a damn if your router gets hacked and the router poses a bigger threat to you than the cable modem.
Stephen Fechtner (Madison) says...
I have 2 4K TV, 2 more smart TV currently use the Cisco DCP3216 modem with a Linksys EA8500 Router. When streaming movies and using a computer the movie will sometimes stop and the internet on the computer slows down. We are with Spectrum- Charter and were at down load speed 60 but just went up to 100 and are having the same problem. I am looking into getting a TP-Link AC1750 Archer CR700, or TP-link AC1900 CR1900 modem/router but charter says these are not that good. What would be your recommendation.
Toby Tyler (Silver Creek) says...
Spectrum site says 6183 arrus is not ipv6 compatible but the listing on amazon says it is and that the 6141 and the 6190 is also compatible...please comment
Dan says...
The Arris website says the SB6183 IS IPv6 compatible. See here: ARRIS SB6183 Page
Mike Large (Ashland Ky) says...
I want to make sure I'm not downgrading from the router Spectrum has currently supplied. It is a UBEE DVW301. If I get the ARRIS/Motorola SBG6900-AC will I see improvement?
Keatie Kok (Durham) says...

Walt (Monroe) says...
Any trail off in internet speed/specs/performance etc. using "a" splitter with purchased 3.0 cable-internet modem and (existing) phone modem?
ms (St. Petersburg) says...
We had an Access Point upstairs and Spectrum states they do not support these? So we turned it in. Is this true? How else can I bridge the Wifi to upstairs portion of our house? Any advice?
Susan Conner (Buffalo) says...
I need a modem separated from my router for work. Is there a modem with multiple Ethernet connections that I could use ? I have TWC and my computer has to connect directly to modem not the router.
Dan says...
There are no modems without a wifi router that has more than one ethernet port. Don't know if this would work for you, but you can buy a wired router (no wifi) with multiple ethernet ports and plug that into the modem. Here's one for around $20 at Amazon: TRENDnet 4-port router
Debbie (Florida) says...
I need an eMTA for Brighthouse. Can you buy those? I do not want wifi router.
Dan says...
No, you can't buy an eMTA for Brighthouse. I think you can still buy a non-eMTA modem and use the Brighthouse supplied modem for your telephone. Brighthouse won't charge you for the telephone modem. Read the note "If you have Time Warner phone service" at top of this page.
Rick Anderson says...
If I get a modem without wireless routing I assume I'll need a separate wireless router? Any recommendations?
Richard McCarthy (Buffalo) says...
I that at some point TW/Comcast will phase out the Ambit DOCSIS 2.0 but that's what is hooked up to my laptop now and my son has a spare (new.same U10CO18 DOCSIS 2.0)Ubee that would save me $10 a month. I'm assuming that: even tho TW doesn't recommend this model I should be able to get them to register it if it duplicates what I now have
Robin says...
What is the best modem without wireless on the market that is compatible with Optimum/Cablevision?
Harold (Syracuse) says...
I bought the Netgear Nighthawk Modem and router all in one and it is so future proof. With 24x8 ability and the auto 2.4Ghs and 5Ghz my 2 wired computers are running at 2.4(because they are not wireless anyways) but the best part is ALL of my other devices are running 5G. 16 devices at once. With the AC1900 1.6Gbps and with Beamforming=, it has a range all around my house and front and back yards of full strength.

This modem is TWC approved and if you see sites saying Xfinity only, do not believe it because they have not updated their sites. Its the best $219 i have ever spent. With its Genie software for both PC and mobile devices, all modem settings can be done in seconds without the need to sign in through a browser. Just thought i would add this comment so that this cablemodem/router can be added to the list. Packaging is updated to state it works with TWC.

Donna (Los Angeles) says...
I have had mine for about 18 months. Now going through firmware update for two weeks and counting. My download speed on TWC went from 100 to 2, and I get dropped frequently. I have to reboot several times a day. I will never buy another Netgear product, and never a product I cannot update the firmware myself on.
Krazyk (New Philadelphia .ohio) says...
What is the best modem without wireless on the market for Time Warner we want to do away with our rented modem and already have a netgear wireless router
Dan says...
I'd recommend either the ARRIS SB6141 or the ARRIS SB6183
Ann merritt (Salisbury) says...
I have a comtrend WR-5882 router is that compatible with time warner?
Dan says...
That router and any other WIFI router will work with Time Warner. However, you'll still need to either rent a cable modem or buy one of those listed above and the plug your WIFI router into the cable modem.
DW says...
Does TWC know when the ARRIS SURFboard SB6190 will be compatible to use for 200mbps download and up service?
Dan says...
Time Warner, Brighthouse and Road Runner customers can now use the SB6190
